FOREHEAD LINES: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Raising your eyebrows, concentrating, squinting or frowning - whenever you move your face, your forehead muscles contract. After years of frequent contraction, combined with environmental and lifestyle factors such as exposure to sunlight, smoking and pollution, lines and wrinkles begin to form.

The main cause of forehead lines is a decrease in the production of collagen and elastin in the skin. These proteins are responsible for our skin’s elasticity, but production drops as we age. Good preventative action includes minimising stress, using an SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays all year round, avoiding smoking, drinking plenty of water and following a good skincare routine, especially ensuring the use of a good moisturiser.

When do forehead lines start to appear?

You may begin to notice the first signs of forehead lines in your late twenties and early thirties as faint lines begin to appear. With time, these lines gradually deepen and become increasingly prominent until they are visible even when you aren’t raising your eyebrows or frowning. Although age makes them worse, some people have forehead lines before they have any other signs of ageing skin.

How can I prevent forehead lines?

Keeping your skin protected from the sun is the best prevention for ageing skin. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and plenty of sunscreen to block out harmful UV rays; this will help to preserve your skin’s natural collagen supplies for longer. Anti-ageing injectables such as BOTOX® injections can also be used to relax the facial muscles to help prevent lines caused by repetitive facial movements.

What's the best way to get rid of forehead lines?

The most appropriate method of treating forehead lines and wrinkles is determined by the cause of the lines you have:

  • Lines caused by muscle movement (such as when you smile, squint or frown) are known as dynamic lines.
  • Lines which are present at all times, even when you are not moving your facial muscles, are called static lines

Dynamic lines are usually treated using anti-ageing injections such as BOTOX® injections, which works to relax the muscles in the face.

Static lines are usually treated using treatments designed to strip back layers of damaged skin, such as laser resurfacing, or chemical skin peels.

  • Moisturise: To soften existing forehead lines and wrinkles naturally, keep your skin hydrated with a natural oil such as coconut, avocado or jojoba.
  • Exfoliate: Exfoliation helps to keep skin looking smooth and allows your skincare products to work better by letting them penetrate deeper into the skin.

Medical grade skin peels

Skin peels work by harnessing the power of naturally occurring acids and active ingredients to deeply exfoliate the skin. The treatment stimulates new cell growth and collagen production, helping to reveal fresher, clearer, firmer skin.

Anti-ageing injectables and BOTOX® injections

Your muscles contract due to a signal sent from the brain via nerves. Non-surgical anti-ageing injectables work by interrupting this signal, leaving the muscles relaxed and unable to crease the skin. Anti-ageing injectables such as BOTOX® injections can be administered to the muscles which cause forehead and frown lines, to subtly smooth and soften the skin.

Dermal fillers

For deeper, more established lines, dermal fillers may be an option. This treatment offers near immediate results and lasts up to 12 months. It works by injecting a special solution under the skin to plump and fill lines and wrinkles.

Sculptra™ is used to treat a range of skin concerns, including wrinkles and folds. Administered to the forehead by a medical practitioner, it can subtly smooth and soften forehead lines and frown lines.

This laser resurfacing treatment targets the surface and deeper layers of the skin, encouraging collagen production. Results are immediate and long-lasting; however this treatment does require some downtime to allow your skin to heal.

Microneedling is a rejuvenation treatment which uses small needles to cause tiny punctures in the skin. These small contact points stimulate a wound-healing response in the skin, encouraging new cell turnover and production of collagen and elastin. This creates a plumping effect, helping to smooth out forehead lines and wrinkles.
